What the fuck is this with email addresses that you’re not allowed to reply to? I got an overdaft [sic] notice from my bank today, and it was from a “DoNotReply@…” email address. So not only can they legally steal my money, but I can’t even write back to them to tell them what I […]

I accidentally found this the other day while looking up domain names to buy: FreeIX. I still only kind of understand what this is, but it seems important:
An Internet exchange point (IX or IXP) is a physical infrastructure that allows different Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to exchange Internet traffic between their networks (autonomous systems) by […]

This field is rather complex, so it pays to learn your lingo if you want to get involved in it or simply learn more about it. Terms I have been collecting (thanks to various readers for educating me on them!):
Anonymous internet banking: “Anonymous Internet Banking is the name given to the proposed use of strong […]

It occurs to me that there is a clear and definite reason that secret societies have been painted in such a negative light - it is an oblique attack on two other fundamental rights: the right to privacy and the right to free assembly. Combine those two together: the right to assemble privately for your […]

The counter-culture is filled with memes or ‘brands’ competing for visibility within the larger culture. The most visible of these are usually apocalyptic scenarios of various flavors: Peak Oil, Collapse, 2012.
Each of these scenarios has a certain amount of value as prods to motivate people towards asking questions and constructing creative alternatives for the […]

Courtesy of Jecklin:
For a peek at what’s cooking behind Google’s research lab doors, check out this plan to get your computer to listen in to what you’re watching on tv. By using its microphone to listen in and then connecting to an online database it could identify the show, and how far through you are.
And:
The […]

They don’t even need a warrant to do this.
How would they do that scientifically, if it is powered off? As you may recall, I smashed my cell phone with a big ass rock a while back and have been much happier ever since.
its from fox news so you know it must be true!

Here’s one from ThinkGeek
This one is cooler-looking though, I think. And let’s face it: if you’re going to get into this kind of technology, you owe it to yourself to try and feel as cool and “spy” as possible. (More devices from that retailer)
This noise generator is cool too, if crazy expensive: “The ANG-2200 is […]

Could this example of Roman Catholic canon law be adapted somehow into the modern high-tech world of privacy and personal security?
Let the priest absolutely beware that he does not by word or sign or by any manner whatever in any way betray the sinner: but if he should happen to need wiser counsel let him […]

Excellent Jane Roberts quote, as a follow-up to Marvin Minsky’s Society of Mind quote from a few days ago.
Each reader is invited to participate in the debates and decisions within their own personality: “Each personality contains an inner civilization of the self which he yearns to govern … The ego rises from the civilization […]

The immediate future of data security and individual privacy - as far as I can tell - lies in things like disposable identities and identity trading. That is, until we have legal rights guaranteeing us full personal data sovereignty - a development which though we’re making strides is not likely to come to fruition any […]

These two terms are quite interesting, wouldn’t you say?
Cultural diplomacy is a part of diplomacy. It alludes to a new way of making diplomacy by involving new non governmental and non professional actors in the making of diplomacy. In the frame of globalization, culture plays a major role in the definition of identity and in […]

Paying in cash makes you a nuisance.
Physical paper records for transactions are frowned upon. (That way we can say you owe us whatever we want!)
Become accustomed to swiping an electronic identification tag. (Cash usage lowers reproductive viability.)
Smart Cards belittle your intelligence if you refuse to use them. Already rolling out in college campuses, which […]

I want to stop using Google for this. I don’t trust them to share the best and most relevant of my own data results with my site’s visitors, and I’ve never seen significant financial benefit for that trade-off. So I would like to can them altogether.
Please advise.

You can’t just think happy thoughts and magically have things happen. But that’s how it starts. You create the *experience* of life that you want to have. This may or may not require changing actual reality. The choice is up to you. Everything beyond that is a matter of action and consciously choosing to make […]

Just thought I would let you know that you will no longer be able to find my RSS feed through Google-owned Feedburner. Even though I was able to run ads on the RSS feed through them, I never saw any financial benefit from using the service. I would rather be in direct control of my […]
