China Blocks Everything But Baidu?

Interesting but not surprising tech news:

Chinese citizens trying to access sites owned by Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft aren’t having much luck; instead, they’re often getting redirected to Baidu.

In all likelihood, Baidu, by itself, isn’t powerful enough to pull off this switch. Onlookers suspect the Chinese government, instead.

See also my analysis of parallel searches on Google and Baidu and how they are using RSS to rip content out of our sites and repackage it in a censor-friendly format.

Also, no one has yet convinced me successfully that Google isn’t still involved with Baidu behind the scenes, but that they merely backed off and officially reformatted their public involvement thanks to American outcry over their involvement with censorship efforts on behalf of the Chinese government. Is Baidu just a puppet for Google to act through and still maintain their “Don’t be evil” image?

Comcast is doing some blocking of it’s own.

Yeah I just posted that. We don’t really control the internet like we think we do. We need to get back to local ISP’s and we need to find ways to set up networks which do not rely on infrastructure owned by giant corporations who don’t have our best interests in mind.
