Personal Data Sovereignty
Tools to help you control your datawake and profit off it by selling the self-surveillance to companies:
For the last few days I’ve been using the AttentionTrust recorder and Root.net. If you’ve got Firefox, this basically lets you record everything you do online and analyse that data. Root calls itself the “first open market for the pricing and exchange of realtime consumer data.” This presumably means that at some point I’ll be able to sell my data to advertisers so they can show me more targeted ads. This is really what Google is doing right now and what Microsoft will do pretty soon - harvesting user data to deliver more personalised advertisements. The difference here is that the user is in control. You decide who gets to see your attention data. This really is the holy grail of advertising - perfectly matching sellers to highly receptive buyers. Contextual ads were a tiny step towards efficient advertising - attention is a giant leap.
Root.net was down when I checked, but through the AttentionTrust.org (whose principles I support), you can find other attention recorder services.
