Removing Google AdSense

Okay, I have had enough of Google’s ridiculous bullshit plans to take over all data in the world surreptitiously and I am going to be pulling Google AdSense from *all* of my websites.

Right now, it looks like I have four main options for how to proceed:

  1. Pull AdSense and do not replace it with anything.
  2. Pull AdSense and replace it with a direct competitor: something like Yahoo
  3. Pull AdSense and replace it with an indirect competitor: something like IntelliTXT or Kontera (which I know most people hate, but which I think may be a more viable long-term business model as we move towards “web layers” - more on that sometime soon)
  4. Pull AdSense and ask for sustaining contributions from readers on a regular basis.

My main thing is this: I make on average a reliable $200-250 per month via AdSense. I don’t want to lose that revenue, but I am hell-bent on step-by-step removing ALL of my data from Google and eliminating their ownership of my datawake. The shit they are doing is *just not right* in my estimation, whether or not it is expressly “evil.”

This means I need to find another way to make *at least* that much money per month. My short-term idea was this: pull AdSense and post a one-time request through ChipIn or similar donation site for a$500. That much will cover my revenue loss for a period equivalent to two months. During that time, I will experiment with a couple other ad systems, making my experimentation and the financial results public (without violating any TOS agreements, of course) so that you can benefit from my experimentation - if not necessarily from my advertising.

I also want to install and have handy tools for regular visitors to automatically or avoid advertisements on my site. This would mean a programmatic way of removing ads for people who comment all the time, or else offering a quick link and instructions to a FireFox plugin or similar to scrub the ads from the user experience.

The other option in all of this is to ask for voluntary monthly subscriptions from readers. I really don’t know how much reading this site is worth to the average person, but if 25 people could support it with donations of $10/month, or half as many for $20/month, then that would be pretty nice.

I’m not yet financially in a position where I can just pull ads altogether and not bother with subscriptions or anything though. But other ideas, suggestions, etc would be most welcome. I’m also about to install as a test a bug tracker system for “power users” withing this realm to interact on another plane. So your tax dollars are hard at work! Let me know what you think.

When you posted the link to Digg Labs I tried the site and liked it. It seems like 1/4–1/3 of the tech articles are like these. Is it like this all over the tech literature? If it is there something really wrong.
