I spent all of last week writing song after song like a madman. Don’t know what it was, but something finally clicked, and by the time Day 4 hit, I had seven new songs on my hands. It’s been a while. I wrote a lot of music a few years back, but it never stuck with me like this has been sticking with me. Something is different now. I think it has to do with life experience, emotional maturity, having seen enough of the world to go back out and sing about it.
I sang in highschool: in chorus and jazz choir, but I was always really embarrassed about it somehow, couldn’t get over some element of myself that was standing in the way. But that’s been washed away: simply by living honestly and through preparation. On Saturday, I started a “rock and roll band” and we had our first practice up at the Fox Building. It went great. Hoping to start playing shows around town within 2-3 weeks. It’s basically lonesome drifter music with a healthy dose of heart-ache, lost opportunity and after-the-fact emotional realizations. Gonna try to work in some covers as well. Have some great local musicians and good friends I’ll be working with, and want to start this band as a sort of a tradition: start a new incarnation of it wherever I travel, take these songs and let them live through each new moment, let them grow and expand to fill up all the potential space available to us. Towards that end, most of my creative energy has been channeled into that avenue for the time being. I’ll do my best to keep sharing artifacts reflecting that exploration to this site as I get into this new swing of things.
