I remember hearing about a piece of software a while back which replaced iTunes and could administer files on an iPod and was - I believe - freeware. Does anybody know what I’m talking about and can provide a link? Thanks!

if you’re on Linux, it’s hard to beat Rhythmbox.

I’m thinking about switching to Linux, actually.
I’ve been using Ubuntu Linux for years, and it’s gotten extremely user-friendly lately. You might wait until the next major release (sometime in April, i think). It certainly fits your whole ethos of free, fair, transparent, collaborative, etc.
And philosophical considerations aside, I find it to be just a better, more powerful, fully featured OS than XP (and than Vista by a LONG SHOT).
