Yesterday, I meandered over to New System Bakery on Chestnut Street in Hampden to fill myself up with sausage, egg and cheese. New System is a great local bakery with lots of nice people working there and some great food. Anyway, while I was waiting, I discovered a press release for something called Umbrella Radio, which is part of the Mill Valley Cultural Arts Umbrella, a local arts organization dedicated to arts and artists from the community, along with media, entertainment, news and happenings. The press release was partly an announcement about the online radio station they’re running, along with a call for content. Since then, I’ve contacted the people who run the station and will be submitting some of my “Big Elk” material, hopefully to be “aired” (wired?) as part of their programming and get some exposure within the region.
One thing that’s kind of a bummer though about how they are set up technically, is that their streaming media plays through QuickTime and doesn’t seem to provide any metadata about the song or artist when you’re playing their stream. (Maybe it’s listed elsewhere on the site?) Looks like their tech-end is supported by a company called EastBay Media, and the originating URL for the player comes from them. One obvious way around this would be to embed in the audio itself me saying the names of my songs along with any other identifying info. I’ve been using this approach a little bit on YouTube and MySpace as well… It’s more “folksy” anyway.
