I recently finished working on a freelance web development project with a friend for a favorite client of mine, Greg Ottensmeyer of Telephonet Corporation, a VOIP/internet telephony service provider located in Baltimore, MD.

After I dropped out of art school (I was a painting major) in 1999, I began focusing my creative energy on web development and computers. I’d begun learning about web technologies in high school, having been just a little too young to catch the wave of the first internet boom. Greg Ottensmeyer is the person who gave me my first “big break” into web development as a business (back in my “Holy Robot” days on the web), and helped set me on my current course of internet wizardry which I’ve been riding ever since. Greg and I, despite our differences in background, seem to share a common vision for the positive potential of technology to impact human lives.

This all happened almost ten years ago, and late last year Greg approached me about re-building the Telephonet site which I’d originally designed all those years ago. I worked with my friend, a Baltimore graphic design heavy-weight to come up with a modern web concept to interpret Greg’s new business direction, using a stylish combination of WordPress, Flash and XML.

As I understand it, Telephonet is part of a distributed business model, which means that they are part of an inter-locking network of geographically-diverse voice and data tech professionals and affiliates who work together to custom-fit communications solutions for all types of clients. It is, I think, a fairly futuristic way of doing business: having reliable agents and resources all over who you can tap into as needed to get the job done as quickly and efficiently as possible. Telephonet Corporation acts as a telecomm department or manager for your business (almost like an accountant, but with voice and data lines), providing warm and reliable human-to-human insourcing backed by decades of experience and expertise in all facets of web and phone technology.

In a landscape of cut-out technology companies running border-line scams to make a quick buck, Telephonet stands out from the pack because of the wonderful people working there, who make the company and its services what they are. I cannnot recommend them highly enough and hope to see their business flourish in the years to come!
