What’s the cardinal connection?

Continuing on my bird line of associations

Is it just that they are both red or is there some historical, mythical or other connection?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cardinal_directions

In geography, the four principal directional indicators are marked as points or arrowheads on a traditional compass rose. Called cardinal directions, they are north, east, south and west. There are simple specific means to establish each direction which should work anywhere on Earth where there is a view of the sky.

“The N.Amer. songbird (Cardinalis virginianus) is attested from 1678, so named for its resemblance to the red robes of the cardinals.”

They are both red, both members of the Catholic Clerical hierarchy, but the birds use birdseed and bird bathwater instead of wine and communion wafers.

He was one of the worst of the cover up artists in the priest sex abuse cases that came to light. Now not only are there sexual abuse victims but the loyal parishioners in LA County have to pay out $660 million.
