Internet Refugee Camp
There’s a really funny South Park episode I watched the other night which deftly combined themes I’ve been following here on this site. You can watch it on the internet and it’s sort of about that: it’s about the internet running out, people panicking and going down “Californee way” because they heard there might be internet out that way. So there’s like a post-apocalyptic/catastrophic/Great Depression sort of thing going on, but with this storyline about internet technology and the ways it interpenetrates regular life. Very funny and worth watching. A link I don’t have, but you can find it. I also like their new media strategy with these episodes. I think it goes something like they put the whole episode available for free on the web (maybe as soon as it comes out) and then after a week or so they take it off for thirty days, after which its again available as part of their online archive. My friend has her laptop hooked up through S-video to the television, so we’ve been watching them that way. They’re also peddling some commercials embedded in the episodes, but the commercials are for a South Park-related product, their Imaginationland episode, which was a three-episode series when it came out. Annoying to watch online broken into pieces, but a smart product move to come out with it as DVD format, because of the length. Good marketing meets a good product meets good use of technology and distribution. Makes sense to me, from that perspective, that they would as writers be following similar trend-lines as myself.
