Green Marketing & Localism
I wouldn’t say I’ve been directly keeping track of developments in green branding and sustainable marketing, but they’re becoming so prevalent now in even ordinary retail stores (depending on where you go, I guess) that it’s becoming hard NOT to notice them.
Having seen these trends developing first online for several years and now seeing them rolling out into the “real” world, I’ve begun noticing which elements of the super-meme or what-have-you have mutated or been removed from the original source material.
While Baltimore has a “buy local” initiative, I haven’t heard anyone at all talking about things like the “100-mile diet” really since I left the Pacific Northwest. Don’t have all the words or talking points worked out on it yet, but I’ve been thinking about that particular element of whatever socio-cultural economic shift is happening in the USA right now: local economies, regional crises, things like that. I think that part of the reason that “Global Warming” as a brand-name is bundled together with all these other “green” issues has to do with making channels in people’s minds that say this issue is a collective issue, one which the world or globe faces, as opposed to a particular country, or a region or city.
Anyway, more on this as I hammer out what exactly I’m trying to say here…

Part of the point that I never really got to here had to do with localism leading to separatism and wondering how fine a line of distinction there is between regional self-reliance and all the rest… a whole can of worms.
