REPERMANENT [Sci-Fi Novel] 07

Fisher opened his eyes to total blackness.

Though he was not aware of it, he could neither see, hear, nor feel anything at all. No thoughts, memories, dreams or hopes filled his mind and heart. He was not even a blank slate, for that would have required a ground upon which blankness could exist.

Fisher opened his eyes again and through the blackness a pair of lonesome dark eyes peered back out at him.

“My little Fish,” they called to him.

Broken memories churned somewhere deep inside.

“Veronica?” his voice echoed within the blackness as if coming from somewhere far away outside of him.

Lights began to twinkle dimly, darting here and there, bouncing off one another and coalescing to form a face with which to illuminate the lonesome dark eyes.

A young girl’s face surmounted by black hair smiled at him. Fisher felt a smile well up from inside of him, beamed it back at her.

“Sarah,” he said. The face dissolved into noise. “Sophie…”

Fisher closed his eyes, blackness doubling on blackness.
