REPERMANENT [Sci-Fi Novel] 08

In a circular field, two children went out to play. Though they were older than either of them could remember, they were children compared to the bountiful earth which had birthed them so long ago. Since then they had lived in silence on the edges of fields and forests and streams, watching as the sons and daughters of men multiplied and changed the face of the earth.

The two children remained unchanged though. They were as old and as young as ever. And they ran out into the field holding hands, a peculiar collaboration of ancient wrinkles and silky smoothness. The texture and scent of wood followed them wherever they went. Birdsong flowered out from where their small feet touched the earth. They left no marks in their passing, only loved each other. This was all they knew; this was their language.

And when they found the son of man lying asleep in their playground, their hearts bubbled over with joy. Songs formed on their lips in celebration of their sleeping discovery. Music lifted from the wings of the wind and their feet took to dancing as their eyes fluttered closed. They took one the other, hands clasped together and laughed and spun until they could remember themselves no more.
