I’ve been using Skype now for well over a year as a replacement in my digital lifestyle for my cell phone, which I smashed on purpose (good riddance). Overall, Skype has been a fine but not great way for me to communicate with people. I personally recommend getting a phone number and voicemail through it, so people with regular phones can call you. The sound quality is often very good, but also is dependent on your internet connection. So if you or somebody in your house is downloading some nice illegal music packages, then you’re going to end up with really big connectivity problems. That’s *mostly* manageable though if you’re vigilant about your internet usage. But it sucks if you’re travelling and don’t have regular access to reliable web connections - which is often how I roll.
But the thing I find the most irritating about Skype - at the moment - is that they keep coming out with new billing packages and changing old ones. I don’t like having to constantly wonder if what I signed up under has been discontinued, changed or replaced by some incrementally better or slightly different deal. I just want to be able to “set it and forget it” as they say.
