We Need a New NASA

When I was a kid, NASA was one of those government agencies that seemed unequivocally cool. Sending people into space on rocketships. It’s hard to argue with that simply because it creates a strong image and a symbol of why we should act together as a nation.

What’s our cool agency now, Homeland Security? Hardly. You only create an office with the word “Security” in the title when people are scared and feeling insecure. “Security” as a word doesn’t instill any feeling of hope, any swelling of pride that we as humanity are doing something pretty cool and amazing (even if the space race really was mostly about launching communications and military technology).

My question for the reader then would be: what would be a cool new positive hopeful project for the United States government to create a high-profile “hip new agency” or some kind of wonky political task force around? “Saving the earth” or whatever is the obvious choice, but that’s just so Captain Planet and Al Gores and 1990’s. We need to like start exploring other dimensions as a nation or something really far out and weird that everybody can get behind because nobody knows what it really means…
