Subcultural Codes & Reference Points

This is old news that I posted way back when, but I’ve been thinking about it and wanted to repost the snippet. I feel like its one of the most important subjects potentially out there as far as the definition and legal protections around small groups and their intellectual property rights. In this example, I’m sort of extrapolating the tribal group as being somehow comparable to a subculture or very specific group of creative people, which has its own semiotic codes and signs which get co-opted into a corporate-controlled meaning system:

Microsoft is under legal attack in an unconventional intellectual property spat. The Redmond giant is being dragged through the courts by a Chilean tribe known as the Mapuche Indians, who allege that Microsoft has stolen their language.

Have not yet looked around to see how this case played out, since this is from 2006.
