Rain in Baltimore, #435

It’s raining in Baltimore, just like that Counting Crows song. The kind of rain that helps trees drop their leaves. A warm rain though. Maybe we still have a few weeks.

So far my big plan to get a bunch of cool short term labor jobs isn’t paying off too well. Have been picking up piecemeal work for my theatre, but nothing else has come of my offering to work for free in order to learn new skills, etc. I didn’t expect any real results off that kind of an ad, but I like to post my intentions in a public forum such as Craigslist, cause it always introduces the wild card element. Been thinking about putting together a simplified version of my ad to post in the lobby of some local grocery stores and coffee houses. (Do people still do that anymore?) Something that sounds more like a social experiment in living according to simpler, maybe more traditional values than like a simple offer of employment. I guess my thing is I’m trying to look for a qualitatively richer experience of life, and I basically want to be able to do it on my own terms. Because I know it *can* work that way, whether or not it always *does*. By richer, of course, I don’t necessarily mean monetarily. Although that wouldn’t hurt my feelings much either. I mean, I guess, my priorities as a human being have been so radically shifted over the past five years or so that I do the things I do for different reasons, and as a result of that applied purposive filtration, I end up getting vastly different experiences and types of experiences than I used to in my life. It works for now, as I tinker daily with the expression of the basic mechanisms which underlie such a way of living.

    Ever consider traveling abroad?

I am planning to spend April May and June cycling through SE Asia-Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. Should cost about $15-$20 a day. Cheaper to live there than here.

Decent hotels are $10 a night meals for a $1 to $3.50 off the street.

I think its a good phase of life to go through but not a good plan. The problem might be that you planned to go through this phase instead of letting the phase go through you.

Yeah, but not long term. I’ve seen ads similar to this but you never see them around for more than a few months. I guess if you’re dependible you get a lot of work and don’t have to advertise and if you’re not then you have to get a steady job to pay the bills.

Based on my work experience at a work release center I’d say that the ‘underground’ economy has shrunk significantly and gained a criminal conotation that is different than it had before and that is going to have a big impact on your plans.

The people with the money or experiences you’re looking for are going to be a little shy about brushing up against the police state we’ve become. By shunning the ’safety’ of a normal life you’re automatically aligning yourself with ‘the other’.

People come out of prison and have been gone for a while and see the changes starkly but we see things change gradually and don’t notice.
