Authenticity, Sincerity, Performance, Image

The internet is a performance media. It requires action over time to tell your story, whether you are a corporate brand, or an individual person trying to make sense of how their own narrative enmeshes with the rest of the world. The great temptation and liberty of the internet as a medium is to do and say and explore things that you can’t or wouldn’t in the world as an author, actor and character. Which means it’s easier to go farther out on a limb, because you have a shield between your online actions and your real actions.

This has something to do with the Greek persona, I think. The exaggerated masks the actors donned to communicate emotion and character over greater physical distance. The masks were carved in such a way to amplify their voices as well. Exaggeration of expression seems to aid communication on a mass level.

But within the context of spectacle, what of subtlety and nuance? How to whisper if your craft lies in shouting?

And once you can create and communicate in living images, what happens to the Self? Does it become the characters and stories for which it acts as host and vessel? I’m having trouble keeping track of history, of what I was or what I was supposed to be. Letting go is total freedom. Peace wherever you are. Love as much as you need it. To be a man may simply be to Live in spite of Death.
