I’m in the middle of a ton of research on hospitality traditions. But it keeps veering off into international issues, which seem very closely aligned with the subject matter. Perhaps that’s why I became so interested in the subject to begin with. In any case, the political elements are not necessarily the ones I aim to focus on in this installment. So I wanted to save these for later use. Think of it as a save game point during a creative interrogative process:
- Diaspora
- Refugee
- Exile
- Homeland
- Ostracism
- Penal transport
- Collective punishment
- Right of asylum
- Government in exile
- Provisional government
- Micronation
- Immigration detention
- Stateless persons
- Unauthorized arrival
- Population transfer
- World War II evacuation and expulsion
- Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization
- United Nations list of Non-Self-Governing Territories
- List of unrecognized countries
- Displaced person
- Displaced persons camp
- Environmental refugees
- Refugee camp
- Shanty town
- Hooverville
- Expatriate
- Separation anxiety
Applied to the modern situation, I feel like a return to traditional hospitality may soon be in order as grid points fail from natural or other disasters. There are going to be a lot (more) of people without a home someday soon, living on the road outside the protection of normal laws and customs. How they are treated will be an enormous determining factor for global society for the next 50 years.
