Monday night, at a burlesque show in Hollywood. We all sang “Happy Birthday” twice (once for the birthday girl and once for the birthday boy, while each were spanked by Lili Von Schtupp.)

last saturday night, at a party at a friend’s house. people were jamming on various instruments (drums, guitar, upright bass, electronic organ), and the rest of the room was dancing, and then singing spontaneously and improvisationally, individually but together, like each individual voice was another instrument in the jam. my friend called it a frog chorus.

    it was awesome.

    Frog chorus, I like that.

Mine was at a pig roast this weekend in NYS, over dinner, we had songbooks and afterwards around the fire. Acoustic guitar, bongos a drumset all outside. Everyone was wasted and singing, together. The world needs more of that.

There were about fifty or sixty of us, give or take. And one roast pig. Aside from being tremendously fun, the whole thing re-opened my eyes to what the importance of music to the cohesion of social groups can really be. Singing songs together publicly, people lifting up their voices as one has an extremely powerful effect. It washes away differences in background and lifestyle and unites people in what can be a very moving way. [...]
