One of my past-times is trolling Craigslist for odd jobs to pick up a few extra bucks on the side, learn new skills and make new contacts around town. I can’t tell you how I often I see posts like the one below, written by someone who considers themselves a professional laborer:
what is it with you people? I am always looking to make some extra cash on the side, but i’m not going to work for next to nothing. I have many years of remodeling experience and i do good work. just remember, you get what you pay for. there should be a seperate section on craigs list just for people like you! maybe you should go into the ghetto and find yourself a drug addict laborer, then pay somebody like me to do it right.
I’ve written about going rates for skilled and unskilled labor in the past, so I won’t rehash that argument. But I wanted to highlight this one for a common theme: “you should go into the ghetto and find yourself a drug addict laborer.” As if every person who works below a certain dollar-per-hour figure is a drug addict. The other common phrasing I’ll see is “crack addict,” as though only people with severe chemical dependencies are willing to work for reasonable rates. People need to get a clue!
