Rumbling ship engines, seismic surveys by oil and gas companies, and intrusive military sonars are triggering an “acoustic fog and cacophony of sounds” underwater, scaring marine animals and affecting their behaviour.

“There is now evidence linking loud underwater noises with some major strandings of marine mammals, especially deep diving beaked whales,” Mark Simmonds, Science Director of the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society, told a news conference in Rome.

If you want to look at communication simply as the response your own actions (which are a form of communication) instill in others, then I would say that accidentally killing another lifeform - or class of lifeforms - is probably a pretty good indication that you’re doing a pretty shitty job at the old universal communications game.

It’s almost like what’s happening with the Navy technology is almost like a death scream or probably banshee sort of sound to the highly intelligent creatures who have organic nervous systems which are much more finely tuned than the metal and electronics which make up human components. If someone was constantly screaming in both your ears, you’d probably be looking for a way to end it all as well…

Would make more sense for the Navy technologies to make better use of the organic systems which evolved naturally in animals. That way, they would be gaining superior technology and reducing their strain on the environment. Unduly straining your environment ends up in greater project costs over time, so better just to be more efficient and sensitive from the get-go, while still maintaining a position of strength. Likewise, learning to communicate universally is simply a more direct and efficient method of interacting with other sentient autonomous beings of any paradigm or point of omnidimensional origin.
