[...] I hate to be alarmist, but it may be time to start considering fallback positions… You don’t even need to be a terrorist or rioter to ask yourself these questions either. What would you do if the internet suddenly stopped working? How would you gather and transmit relevant data to like-minded individuals? Maybe now my interest in amateur radio is starting to become a little more clear… I might also recommend downloading and storing websites which have useful practical data. [...]

On Jan 20th 2009 a new President will be sworn in. With millions coming to the Washington area for this event, does anyone think we will have reliable Cell service or Land line phones. I can assure everyone that we will have reliable Amateur radio communications.

Not that I necessarily expect it to happen, but it’s a matter of preparedness. That and it seems cool! [...]

Following the 1973 oil crisis, the U.S. government imposed a nationwide 55 mph speed limit, and fuel shortages and rationing were widespread. CB radio was often used to locate service stations with a supply of gasoline, to notify other drivers of speed traps, and to organize blockades and convoys in a 1974 strike protesting the new speed limit and other trucking regulations.
