I like that part in The Hobbit where the one dude, it turns out, can understand the language of birds. I believe this happens in the legend of Sigurd as well, where he gets bathed in the dragonsblood and suddenly can understand the language of nature. Whether or not this points to some hidden esoteric truth (and it well may), it strikes me that thinking about this sort of thing provides an interesting backdrop against the subject of technology facilitating communication, and the restriction of same.

My interest in “out-there” frequencies lately and the subject of universal communication definitely overlaps with the subject at hand. Would it be possible to build a communications media which would facilitate exchange and communication between different species of animals, between humans and their ecosystem? Certainly, we already have that technology though, looking at it another way: our actions directly impact the world around us. Everything is a feedback loop. You don’t really need the internet or computers or cell phones or any other “out there” technology to “connect” to the world around you. Just listen to the birds. Sing back to them. It’s gotta count for something.
