Dream I Ching Symbol: Tetragram

This morning, I had a very vivid dream which consisted pretty much solely of an I Ching symbol and its associative meaning. I have re-created the symbol here for the curious:

In my dream, the symbol was a minor revelation which crystallized some energetic pattern which I was riding, and put everything into some proper order which “made sense” somehow at the time. In the dream, the overt meaning of the tetragram was very plain:

“A SOUL AT CRUSH”

At the time, and shortly after waking up, this message made perfect sense in whatever context it originated. But having piled the day’s experiences and experiments on top of it, I no longer really “get” what the whole thing was about. But that’s how I’ve been using the I Ching in waking life though: using it amplify a particular moment, and then completely letting go of whatever meaning or omens I derived from its use.

In case you’re wondering, actual I Ching symbols are typically composed of six lines, a hexagram: which is itself made up of two sets of three lines, trigrams. So the appearance of a four line figure is interesting to me. Interestingly, a search for tetragram (quadragram just sounded wrong) on Wikipedia yielded two items of interest: Tetragrammaton, the Hebrew name for God (one of many), and something called the Tai Xuan Jing (”Canon of Supreme Mystery”, Chinese: 太玄經) , a four-line elaboration of the basic I Ching trigrams attributed to he Confucian writer Yáng Xióng. Not much information on that page though, but the subject of the Yijing is vast and deep, and I’ve only begun to scratch the surface, whether awake or asleep.

Other means of entering Chinese characters include handwriting recognition, OCR and voice recognition. The first and last of these usually must be “trained” before use; that is, the user must first use the system in a special “learning mode” so that the system can get accustomed to the user’s handwriting or speech pattern, and failure to do so will increase the recognition error rate. These, especially the latter two, are less frequently used than keyboard-based input methods and, as with even the most advanced English language systems, suffer from relatively high error rates, especially when used without proper “training”, though the error rates are an acceptable trade-off to many users.

I’m pretty sure that this symbol transmission was a response to an urban shaman 4-strand query string I braided the other day on the subject of the Mandala OS / Kaleidoscope web browser

Well… if these four lines appeared at the heart of a hexagram, its heart/core/seed (nuclear hexagram) would be 28, Great Overstepping. ‘Soul at crush’ - definitely - overload, breaking point, enforced great transition, striding out of the collapsing shelter/framework and over the lines.

The four hexagrams that share this core: 55, Feng, Abundance and the garrison city where Wu receives the mandate; 30, Clarity; 56, the Sojourner; 62, Small Overstepping.

  1. [...] Without warning, millions of points appear in a deep field - all within his control. These are the points he will feel together to transmit the call, to bring The Ancient Watchers. This is Indra’s net; this is a vast web of gossamer information, a million points of pure light reflecting each other. Crowding together they form the symbol Rho - the end of protein synthesis. “Rho,” slow and deep, issues from his chest and travels along the blue antenna into the multiverse. Rising, engulfing, the tone, “Rho,” is everything. A deeper tone shoots back immediately and overpowers The Seeker. He gestures the tone again with quartz in hand, tracing the sign. “Rho.” Again the deeper tone returns, powerful and endless. He has never experienced a depth like the seemingly-infinite chasm formed in this sound. [...]
