This quotation comes to us via a Yahoo news article about riots like the ones in Greece spreading to the rest of Europe.
“At least some of the protests were organized over the Internet, showing how quickly the message of discontent can be spread, particularly among tech-savvy youth. One Web site Greek protesters used to update each other on the locations of clashes asserted there have been sympathy protests in nearly 20 countries.”

Combine with the Wired/Army report from several weeks back:
“Could Twitter become terrorists‘ newest killer app? A draft Army intelligence report, making its way through spy circles, thinks the miniature messaging software could be used as an effective tool for coordinating militant attacks.”
I hate to be alarmist, but it may be time to start considering fallback positions… You don’t even need to be a terrorist or rioter to ask yourself these questions either. What would you do if the internet suddenly stopped working? How would you gather and transmit relevant data to like-minded individuals? Maybe now my interest in amateur radio is starting to become a little more clear… I might also recommend downloading and storing websites which have useful practical data.
I want to tread lightly in this area and not add to anyone’s anxieties, but I have to say the tenor of the news this days has me feeling a bit anxious myself. From Bush openly stating that he’s abandoning the principles of the Free Market System in order to save the Free Market System, to the fact that we keep seeing reports about military units being rolled out for active duty in the Homeland (even teaming up MP’s with local law enforcement agencies for routine things like sobriety checks). Call me crazy, but I don’t even see how Obama with all his glory and media savvy is going to turn the tide of trends which have been seeded decades in advance and are coming to fruition now. I mean, I love the message of “Hope” and all that, but I also love this graphic that I snagged off Cryptogon:

Maybe it’s time we build a getaway rocketship and head for the stars?

The same occurred to me relating to the amateur radio license. I was licensed year ago and never really did anything with it. It’s always a good idea - especially if the zombies attack.
It took a few years for our mirror image Depression to unfold. I guess with technology it could take weeks. But zombie attacks should never be ruled out. (It could happen!)
