Play As International Language, Video Game Design

Way behind the curve on this one, I know, but I played Mario on Wii last night for the first time ever which was AWESOME and made me feel GREAT. Thought about this before while playing with kittens at work: that play is the most basic form of communication which crosses national, linguistic, cultural and species boundaries.

With an immersive experiential game system like Wii, the pan-human appeal of it stems from how well-suited their interface is to the natural emotional and practical expressions of the human body. Shake the controller to ward off enemies. Shit like that. Any new technology systems which hope to be effective need to learn to adapt to human customs, and be open to uses totally outside of their original design. People are always going to find a way to misuse things. Design it so that is rewarded instead of restricted and punished.

Yeah. I would too, if I were comfortable admitting that in a public forum. ;)
