Cloud Computing, Distributed Intelligence, Human Intelligence Tasks, Reality Programming #codechant

Gotten to a point lately via Twitter and other collaborative conversations where I feel like the best thing I can do is just loosely stitch together fragments and ideas, and then let ‘em rip and see where they grow/go on their own.

This one fits best under the Twitter-style hashcode I created called “#codechant,” and marries together computer programming, distributed applications, collective intelligence, flashmobs, smartmobs, human intelligence tasks (a la Amazon mTurk service), performance, ritual and community consciousness.

The basic premise is that you could get a group of people together with an interest in the above subjects, hand them all written “computer” programs which could be interpreted as live musical performance instructions, and then see what comes of it. Experimentation, I’m certain, would lead to interesting results - along with conventions and standards arrived at ad hoc, as a group, on how to interpret various passages of code, different types of symbols, terms and notations. Would love to put together many different groups made of many different types of humans who would collaboratively write, experiment with and perform these pieces. Would be really cool to see how totally disparate groups modulate each piece to suit their own needs, backgrounds and interests.

(On a related note/dream reference: a couple months back, I dreamt that there was a group of artists in Canada who I would periodically send script ideas to, and if they chose to perform and release them as digital media (which was for sale), they would send me a small cut of their takings…)

That’s phase one. Phase two would be something like hooking in all these different live performance smart #codechant mobs into some distributed cloud computing system whereby a program would automatically break up large complex tasks which needed to be accomplished within spacetime (instead of in cyberspace) and then the groups would be able to go out and interpret the output #codechant instructions as an artistic performance or an actual action within the real world.

Okay, that completes my transmission for right now. Will attach additional details to this subject as they come down the pipe…

What is Google’s cloud? It’s a network made of hundreds of thousands, or by some estimates 1 million, cheap servers, each not much more powerful than the PCs we have in our homes. It stores staggering amounts of data, including numerous copies of the World Wide Web. This makes search faster, helping ferret out answers to billions of queries in a fraction of a second. Unlike many traditional supercomputers, Google’s system never ages. When its individual pieces die, usually after about three years, engineers pluck them out and replace them with new, faster boxes. This means the cloud regenerates as it grows, almost like a living thing.

The highest cost of servers next to electricity is cooling, right? OTEC, baby.

Or, like they’ve suggested, just put the whole server farm out on the ocean itself.

[...] This one may be more prescient, or else a coincidence… Yesterday on this site and on related Twitter accounts, we spoke a great deal about clouds, cloud computing, cloud shamanism, cloud warfare, etc and we even spoke about divining the future. Today, we see as number 17 in the top 100 USA Google trends, “lenticular clouds.” So this is a direct hit, since I had downloaded two photos of lenticular clouds at that time to use in upcoming posts.
