And Julia, "The Culture" reference came from &lt;a href="http://www.overcomingbias.com/2008/12/theft-of-destiny.html" rel="nofollow"&gt;here&lt;/a&gt;, I believe (at least, this was my recent introduction to the term).  Eliezer Yudkowsky's work on imagining what an Friendly AI could be is pretty amazing.  90% of the time, "AI" could just as easily be switched with "God", or more appropriately "YHWH", since Eliezer was raised in an &lt;a href="http://www.overcomingbias.com/2009/01/free-to-optimize.html" rel="nofollow"&gt;Orthodox Jewish environment&lt;/a&gt;.  If anyone's going to have some good thoughts on encoding "G.O.D." it's someone who shares a background with the kabalists!  :)</description>
