Bioregionalism is a very complex ecosocial movement centering on one’s local geographic area – one’s bioregion. It is an “ecosocial” movement in that it assumes and illustrates that environmental and social issues are deeply interrelated. On the personal level it focuses on cultivating an intimate personal connection to the local bioregion. On the community level, it seeks to develop social, political, and economic structures in harmony with the specific land of the area. As an idea, “bioregion” has been employed in two main ways: by scientists and natural resource managers to distinguish different biogeographic regions (scientists often use the term “ecoregion”), and by those seeking a new way of living with the Earth (which is sometimes termed “cultural bioregionalism”). As a movement, it functions in two main ways: as a short-term reform movement, giving us guidance about what we can dos now in our current situation; as a long-term “utopian” movement toward a fundamentally different society and relationship with nature.
