Just got this note from my web hosting company, Dreamhost, explaining why my website has been acting so shittily the past few days:
I’m writing you about your database, [____], which is used for the site http://www.timboucher.com/journal/. It looks like this blog is using the very inefficient “yet-another-related-posts-plugin” plugin, and with googlebot and yahoo crawler both hitting it at the same time, these queries were causing a near 100 load on the mysql server. This plugin is inefficient due to the multiple columns doing full text searches, and the complexity of it. I did not find a way to optimize the query by indexing.
Special thanks to Dreamhost techs for solving this problem on my behalf. Very happy to have it sorted out, since I am totally loving this new WP 2.7 install and the new theme action and all the rest. That plugin had some pretty cool features, but I’ve gone back to the old standby “Related Posts” plugin which originated at a site called w-a-s-a-b-i which is no longer online.
Anyway, on with the show! Where were we? What’s interesting today?

Speaking of, is anybody messing with Supercache or similar? Any benefit to it?
I use supercache yes: should speed up your blog as well. It means that not every time someone looks at your blog does the database have to be called.
Thanks for your hint about the just another related post plugin. I was using that too - and it may be at least part of the reason my blog has been so SLOW (despite using supercache).
Hi Tim,
Hmm, that’s some really unfortunate timing… I just released a beta of YARPP 3.0 (3.0 beta 1) which introduces a new caching feature, markedly increasing performance, particularly for the feeds.
If you get a chance and are willing to try, I’d recommend you try the beta. It’s still a beta, but it should definitely help with the database performance.
Best,
mitcho
This was interesting last year. I suppose it’s still interesting today.
