Meanwhile, in the Real World™, things always take longer than I expect them to in my head. The curse of an over-active imagination, thinking that reality reacts as quickly as the power of thought. It’s a good thing it doesn’t really. Who knows what could happen…

One thing that the TIME TRAVEL CLUB project has really forced me to focus on is the lost art of “having people over.” In-home micro-localized entertainment - if you wanted to formalize it into some kinda keyword string.
But having people get together in the physical world, unlike in virtual spaces, requires certain logistical elements be in place. Like locations to meet up which smoothly facilitate group activities. Like coordinating participants from diverse groups, backgrounds and lifestyles to meet together in some kind of mutually agreed-upon consensus space. Hospitality is full of rituals. Offerings and refusals. Fine-tuning of environmental factors to facilitate everyone feeling at ease, enjoying themselves and establishing a fertile creative atmosphere with at least an air of spontaneity is really no small feat. It requires, I’m realizing a good house crew, people who have a natural ease with social activity, and the ability to coordinate and schedule in such a way that works for tons of different people.

With only really a week and a half under my belt with this project, I guess I’m actually doing pretty well. People know something’s up and seem to want to be a part of it. That’s an excellent first step.
A friend and neighbor pointed out, after tonight’s meeting wore to its close, that this kind of thing is the “new going out”, what with this Economic Situation I keep hearing we’re in. Most of the effects I see of it in a practical sense though are that I can’t afford to spend as much out on food and beer as I once may have. Not that I’ve ever lead an extravagant life by any means. But even my bare bones system of enjoying myself has seen a belt-tightening. Which I’ve been taking steps to seamlessly integrate into my goals at building a community of collaborating artists, musicians and thinkers. Still a matter of finding the right formula though to bring together motivation and inspiration in the same space and time. I had a bunch of chicken soup this time. A little bit of beer. That’s all you need.
We’re off to a good start. What comes next is the really interesting part…

Great to hear Tim! I’m moving to a new apt this weekend, with a big living room full of great instruments and fancy gear. In other words, the Amsterdam TIME TRAVEL CLUB will soon be inaugurated!
I wanted to share a great quote from the always worth (re)reading guru Joseph Campbell, on his computer in 1988:
