I’m going to try and re-model my bit-part portrayal of the postmaster in Chekhov’s Cherry Orchard after this photo of this guy, via Corbis:

Although the air mail and the motor truck have attained a permanent place in the United States Postal Service, Joseph Krause, one of Washington’s veteran carriers still covers his extensive suburban route on a bicycle. Krause was a member of the J. Gordon Lennett expedition to the North Pole in 1881 and has been on the Postal Service over twenty years.
