Hair, Green Jobs & National Bike Routes

Will be attending what looks to be two excellent events tonight: the first is a free lecture on “green jobs” at the Enoch Pratt Library in Mount Vernon, given by a friend of mine who used to head the B’More Jugglers club in Hampden. The second is a full-scale production of the hippie-musical “Hair” put on at the BBOX Theatre at MICA (which I hadn’t heard existed until a day or two ago). Opening night is tonight and is only five bucks. I’m pretty excited for both, and think it’s awesome that the art school I dropped out of is catching onto the rising theatre wave that is sweeping across the arts community. Oh, and I’ve just received word that there will be another folk music jam up at Rancho Grande in Hampden tomorrow, after 8pm. Will try to swing by there once I get out of my show at Everyman (should be over by 10pm).

In other news, my post on North American bike-and-hike-only routes has been generating some excellent conversation. Not only has a rep from Adventure Cycling chimed in with pertinent info, but another fella has linked us to a nearly thirty minute audio interview with AC about the genesis of the inter-state bicycle route numbering system - a concept which I fully support and am very excited to see people actively involved in. It’s a really simple idea with, I think, far-reaching implications for this continent.

Currently listening to Lou Reed’s “Transformer” and a Toots & the Maytals collection.

I work like 2 blocks from Tessla’s house, and I can see his old Eastern Orthodox church from my office window. They have a bust of him out front, I think.

one block further away? The main NYC Freemason lodge… :)

Went and checked out that church today. Turns out it’s a Serbian Orthodox cathedral, dedicated to St Sava.

Couldn’t get inside, but the door to what I assume was the old rectory (now looks like it’s apartments) had some awesome architectural detail work. Didn’t have my camera on me today, but I’m thinking I might go back and take some pictures…

Anyway, here’s a good picture of the inside of the cathedral. Pretty cool.
