Investigative Consumer Reports

Apparently, I have to have an investigative consumer report done on me for the purposes of a job I’m trying to get. I expect the job will be well worth it, but I’m curious as to just what this report is, what it contains, and how they collect the information. A lot of the literature I’m finding on it is pretty vague!

An “investigative consumer report” is a detailed form of a credit report that involves interviews with your neighbors or acquaintances about your lifestyle, character, and reputation.

Investigative consumer reports may be used in connection with insurance and employment applications. You’ll be notified in writing when a company orders such a report. The notice will explain your right to request certain information about the report from the company you applied to. If your application is rejected, you may get additional information from the credit reporting agency (CRA). However, the CRA does not have to reveal the sources of the information.

I’m guessing mostly what they look for is criminal background information in this case, but it makes me wonder just how much of that vast information-gathering network out there is put to use, all those agencies stockpiling data on consumers’ patterns…

I knew background checks were normal for law enforcement or Government jobs, but I’ve never heard of a “background check / credit report”. What kind of job your applying for?

It depends on the job. I’m not going to disclose any details about it though. Just found some of the above wording to be curious.
