They're from the upper mid-west. North Dakota, to be exact. Mostly Scandinavian heritage, plus a lot of German and some English and Irish. I'm not sure if the shivaree was something they grew up knowing about, or if they learned it from other people here.

Yes, I've seen descriptions of shivarees which matches what you're describing. Thanks for the first-hand report. Where are your grandparents from?

My grandparents have told me stories about shivarees. But they didn't use it as a punishment -- it was more of an initiation ritual.
After a young couple was married, their friends and neighbors would descend upon their house at night, sometime after the marriage, and demand hospitality. The newly-weds had to supply food and drink and entertainment throughout the night or else their "guests" would cause trouble. Interesting blend with Halloween "tricks or treats".

Unpredictability is usually only fun so long as it's within a predictable framework. The key word in that last phrase is "selectively". The mind balks at any unpredictability that we can't at least envision gaining some level of predictability. We "cede our desire to predict the actions of our technologies" only to technologies we know (or at least think that we know) we can trust.

Of course, that only applies so long as the unpredictable is seen as hazardous. It could be possible to develop a state of mind where the unpredictable is understood as non-threatening. Most personal/spiritual growth seems to be ways of devising that kind of mind state.

There is NO technical reason to think that google would mark ordinary HTML higher than wordpress files. In fact, aside from loading time, google would NOT see a difference. After all - all this is HTML too.

There are ways to speed up loading time - like installing the wp-cache plugin.

What WOULD definitely get you better results in google however is to make sure your title tags are formulated a bit more efficiently. Starting them with 'The Tim Boucher Experience' isn't exactly optimal. Try the all in one SEO pack and perhaps some of the other plugins collected here:

Last night, i dreamed i was living through some kind of Apocalypse (something that I used to dream about all the time, and reading <em>The Road</em> by Cormac McCarthy has restarted.) I had a big robot thing, which was a kind of cross between a Transformer from the new movies, General Grievous, and one of those powered-armor machine-gun ape things from <em>The Matrix: Revolutions</em>. It was my only companion as I wandered the burnt out husk of the world, which was only medium-bleak compared to how bad it sometimes is in my dreams. Understandably from its appearance, I considered it a kind of toy, and kept telling it to chill out and not point guns at people. It was completely silent, though. It kind of shadowed me as I walked around. I met an old professor-type who talked to me about the Dark Ages, and how the present condition was ten times worse. I eventually came across a bunch of happy people, but then some kind of bad robot which mine had to fight showed up, and everyone scattered in fear, except me, who had to stay because my robot companion was my only friend. In the end, we were just sitting by a river, as people killed each other in the distance and the river started flowing red with blood, which freaked the shit outta me. I've been trying to record my dreams to get them more lucid and vivid, and this is what I get... probably just stress. Monday nights were never good for dreamers.

<blockquote>I was told, by a machine, that I was not allowed to speak with a "live" oporator because my service was suspended. I tried every phone number I could think of to speak with someone, with no luck. So, I fibbed. I pressed option one for connecting a new phone, and low a behold, a "live" person ready and willing to take my money.</blockquote>

Speaking of a "radio phone" I'm still interested in the possibility of getting a wireless ham transceiver and jacking into the phone networks... supposed to be one of your privileges as an operating, and certainly cheaper (if more technically sophisticated) than occasional cell phone use. Though voicemail might be a problem...

I've got a phone, but I only ever use it in emergencies.

Heck, if people won't be my friend unless I've got a radio phone, f*ck 'em. ;-D

My boss thinks I'm absolutely nuts. This is a good thing. :-D

This is hilarious. One of my favorite posts, definitely something for the "saved" file.

And let me tell you, were I looking for a new cellphone company (and I might be soon), I definitely won't be going with these guys...

One of their selling points on their site is <strong>"First Month FREE when you buy any phone online today!"</strong> and their FAQ has a ready answer to why this doesn't happen? WTF.

After a while you develop your own inner iconography. You get your mindscape plotted out or maybe I should say "soulscape"

You have experienced being in the presence of God enough times to know when it is happening.

Awesome awesome article. I love the idea of "making a playground of Reality."
Sometimes it seems that being a charlatan is a way to live most authentically.
You ask if a charlatan is always a liar. I also wonder if being a liar is always a *bad* thing.
I also like what Julia says about believing your own con. I'm often afraid that I'll believe to much in my own myth, whatever it may be. It seems like if you lose yourself in the myth of your making - your lie, your con - then you also begin to lose control over that process of transcending reality or merging into it or whatever it is we want to do. Like getting lost in to much magic.

And now I feel like I'm getting lost in my own comment...

I don't know...Andre the Giant was pretty mellow. Most ST. Bernards are lazy.

I think its his destiny. I think he is being the person he was born to be. He is a friendly Giant going around helping people.

But Like Tim said, These people are all kind of con Artists, but in the end they help people.

I just think that is how life is. The Universe is not as moral as some would like it to be. I am talking about the perspective of the website you linked to and other perspectives like that. Michael Moore and so forth and these anti- Obama factions.

Traveling around the country I meet anarchist kids that shop lift and scam the government and corporations in various ways in order to survive. There was a time when I would never do anything like that. But when you are in a real jam its good to know that stuff.

I bet if either of us three here, Tim, Ian or I became really ambitious and decided to put ourselves out there as Some kind of Amazing Guru and go around giving people advice, we would be able to pull it off just as well as any guru, Ken Wilber included and help just as many people just as much.

Yeah, that was more just an interesting aside.

I think the pituitary glad is a source of growth hormones, which, if it is as overactive in Tony as it certainly appears to be by his physical stature, it might have something to do with his rather extreme approach to personal development as well.

A few years back long before I actually studied magix and such at all, I did an experiment of writing the next day each night and what would happen. I wrote it in poetic form, because that's what I do, write poetry.

Then it worked really well, and it kind of freaked me out a little.

I backed off.

I keep meaning to repeat this experiment.

A few indicators:

1. Something that is completely out-of-place with its surroundings and seems to appear without any cause or source. If you find a book on your shelf that you didn't put there and that no one else who lives in your residence can account for, maybe you should read it.

2. Something that has importance within your current pantheon/worldview/working. If you're dealing with Eris, and you walk by a building with a golden apple painted in the window then maybe you should pay attention.

3. When chance helps further your goals, this can also be a sign from the reality matrix that you are on the right track in a Daoish way.

Stuff like happens to me too but horniness is not usually involved. I'll daydream about some random conversation and get really involved then I'll wind up having a version of that conversation in real life. The 'daydream' usually gives me practise and if I paid attention I had a leg up in whatever the topic of discussion wound up being.

I was walking down Lenora street, in Seattle, homeless, lonely(read "horny") and totally broke. Thinking "Maybe I will meet a hot girl named 'Lenora' and hook up with her etc." This would solve all my problems at once!

So then, what happens? I meet a gorgeous woman my age, with an awesome body, named....Leonora!

But, to be truthful, I am such a dork. I lost my nerve. I am not cool or a pick up artist at all.

I just asked her where the Library was and struck up a conversation with her. I totally could have gotten her phone number. She was into me. I mean I had a premonition in pretty explicit detail about what this imaginary chick named after Lenora street would look like and this vision of a person literally manifested before me.

So it really is true, that fortune favors the bold. So for being a wimp and pussing out, the Universe took care of me that day by connecting me with this friendly, but troll-like "rubber tramp" that gave me food and a place to stay.

I could have stayed with a gorgeous babe, but either way, the Universe will provide for you.

You should TOTALLY do it! You have to make all your own puppets and equipment though - at least I think... It's like the Jedi making his own lightsaber.

Anyway, I used to do puppetry with my mom when I was a really little kid, but haven't messed around with it since though.

To be fair Ian, That's kind of mean though. I mean yeah, he has acromegally. That's hardly his fault. I think he is making the most of the hand that was dealt him. Which is the idea behind his whole philosophy, really.

Overall, I get a positive vibe from the guy, always have. I do have reservations about this flavor of personal development and how it can be too materialistic borderlining on greed, but in a way that's on the person following the technique and their choice.

You can apply it to other goals too.

Great article, Tim.

Another connection I'm looking to develop: in traditional ways of playing commedia characters, each one has styles or systems of movement typical to that character. I've seen mention of dances dedicated to the Orishas, where depending on which one you're dancing for, or which one possesses you, you're going to display different characteristic movements and behavior. Just dropping that in here as a place-holder...

Things have been unusually quiet in this regard. Although, after a year where I had three surgeries on my foot, nearly lost a job I've had for 20 years following a promotion due to my stress and office politics, and racked up a mountain of bills, I've been able to practise gratitude with new intensity.

Sometimes I wake up beaming with gratitude for the roof over my head and I feel like my life is perfect. Then, I go to work and stress out again.

My RCA Pearl has been, on occasion, playing songs that are not actually on it. This has happened twice in the last few weeks.

Considering one of these instances featured a breathing exercise by Isreal Regardie, I think that it would be rather foolish of me not to think of this having a mystical signature.

In regards to Tony's large teeth and overall stature, it may be due <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tony_Robbins#Personal_life" rel="nofollow">the tumor/adenoma on his pituitary glad.

Yeah, I'm finding the same thing. It all depends on how you cluster it, how you chunk or break it apart and how you accent it.

It seems to be dependent on what I am think the sequence is.

If I can go across the bottom (foot -> foot), then back across the top (hand -> hand), it works fine. Works fine in the reverse direction as well.

But if I go hand -> foot -> foot -> hand, I lose it pretty quick. A hand/foot will jump too soon, <em>before </em>the one prior to it.

It seems that in the first case, I'm really only holding two elements of a pattern in my head, whereas in the second case, I have to separate the process into four distinct elements and so it becomes more difficult.

Weird.

The foot really wants to lift with the hand, although not visa versa interestingly enough, and reversing the pattern doesn't change that.

Occasionally also both feet want to go up together.

Interesting how the feet seem a lot harder to control than the hands which pretty much do what they're told.

This for me has been really similar to the throwing a ball from one hand to the other with your eyes closed exercise described here:

http://www.timboucher.com/journal/2008/11/22/best-dexterity-exercise-ever/

Much more difficult than it seemed at first like it would be. Found that my hands kept trying to jump out of sequence and I had to *really* focus to get the pattern to stick. Will keep experimenting with this and would love any other ideas for similar exercises people might have come up with or seen!

Related news item out of Honduras:

Evidently, civil rights have been "temporarily" suspended there...

<blockquote>TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras — An emergency decree that prohibited large street protests and limited other civil liberties following the return of ousted Honduran President Manuel Zelaya will be repealed within 24 hours, the country's interim leader said Monday. [...]

The decree empowered police and soldiers to break up public meetings, arrest people without warrants and restrict the news media, with armed troops stationed throughout the capital to enforce the order.

The main effect of the emergency decree was to close down the two main pro-Zelaya media outlets, Radio Globo and Channel 36, and it blocked protest marches for several days. Zelaya supporters eventually ventured out to demonstrate, but in much smaller numbers than before.

While the decree was in force, the government also retook control of a government Agrarian Institute building that had been occupied by protesters. They detained about 55 people and lodged sedition charges against 38, who were still in custody over the weekend.

Police spokesman Orlin Cerrato said about 1,000 people were detained for violating a curfew that was imposed before the decree.</blockquote>

In the tarot deck I use, the Fool card shows the usual clown-on-the-brink-of-a-cliff image. But the clown isn't looking at the sky. He's looking at a puppet on his hand that looks <em>exactly</em> like him, and, I can only assume, making it dance.

<blockquote>The Muixeranga (Valencian pronunciation: [muj?e??a??a]) is the collective name given to the performance of ancient street dances and human castles, originating in the Valencian Community, which are still preserved in the town of Algemesí, 30 km southwest from Valencia.

The muixeranga is much more than an artistic acrobatic dance. It is a collection of ancient human choreographies of enormous plasticity illustrating various figures and shapes, which are held during the Algemesí town festival (September 7 and 8th), in honor of the so-called Virgin of Health (Mare de Déu de la Salut).</blockquote>

<blockquote>The motto of Castellers is "Força, equilibri, valor i seny" (Strength, balance, courage and reason).[7]

    * Strength: A casteller is usually a stocky person. The first castellers were peasants that were accustomed to holding great weights and were under much physical exertion.
    * Balance: For supporting other above in the castell while relying on those below for support requires a strong sense of balance and trust.
    * Courage: The most important characteristic for castellers, especially for young children forming the highest levels of the castell.
    * Reason: Rehearsing and performing requires a great deal of planning and reasoning. Any error can cause the structure fail and break apart.

The founder of APF being Serbian would, I guess, explain the logo-crest similarity.

But this little item stands out to me from the USA Today story, an "unusual wrinkle":

<blockquote>Mercedes SUVs belonging to APF began showing up recently in town with magnetic decals that said "City of Hardin Police Department." The decals were later removed.</blockquote>

How quirky, I'm sure. Reminded me of something I clipped on my site about rules and ruses of war - not that this is what that is. It's just food for thought. <a href="http://www.timboucher.com/journal/2005/07/24/an-integral-approach-to-conspiracy-theory/" rel="nofollow">I'm all about cross-disciplinary research</a> is all:

<blockquote>
In some cases, which international law accepts as a legitimate “ruse of war”, a direct action force may infiltrate to the target area in civilian clothes, but must make some distinguishing insignia visible before taking any combat actions. Had the hostage rescue force in Operation Eagle Claw actually moved into Tehran, they would have worn dark, nondescript clothing with American insignia under black tape. Before taking any combat action, they were to remove the tape.

Yeah Keaton's stunts are friggin riculous! Love that guy's work. Thanks for the reference Justin. It seems like SUCH a French way of looking at things... have never managed to get through that whole Barthes book before, but maybe I have the French culture and historical background to cipher it out now...

Really interesting how Copeau was given an opportunity to export his theatre to America pretty much expressly for the purpose of spreading good will towards and influence under French culture. Few people seem to discuss the political purpose - usually unstated overtly - of so much of theatre...

This might be a reach, but you could make some kind of line between blackface - soot, black burning residue covering your face, toss in yer carbonari, mix in some people being burned at the stake... blackface becomes something like heretic

Always wondered about those blacked-up Northern English Morris dancers (just about still surviving in the face of assumptions of crass racism) and the Carbonari - something in Holy Blood Holy Grail claiming pre-C19th origins? Some Cathar / Albigensian connection? Dunno.
